ECC & LOWER SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION

ECC and Lower School Physical Education

Daily Physical Education classes are an essential component of educating the whole child at LFCDS. We are pleased to continue offering daily, thirty-minute PE classes for our students in Senior Kindergarten through 4th grade. Preschool PE will continue meeting once per week and Junior Kindergarten, twice per week. To create smaller PE classes, our classes will be sectioned by homeroom, located outside on our playing fields, utilizing 6-foot social distancing requirements. Students will not be required to wear a face-covering when outside, but are welcome to.

The class structure and trademarks of our PE curriculum will stay the same: an individual warm-up, class activity, and calming cooldown. Physical activity, skill development, and individual and team competition will be emphasized during classes. We will move our focus on team athletics and activities that involve the sharing of equipment to later in the school year.

Students will use hand sanitizer before and after class and will not share equipment during class. All equipment will be disinfected and sanitized between classes. In the event of inclement weather, we will utilize the big gym and other areas of the school to maintain social distancing requirements. In the event that we are inside, we will require each student to wear a face covering.

UPPER SCHOOL ATHLETICS

The importance of students remaining physically active, socially engaged, and most importantly, providing a safe experience are the driving forces for our fall athletic program. Sports at LFCDS will look a bit different in the fall. However, our philosophy and the importance we place on teamwork, skill-building, physical fitness, and having fun will remain consistent throughout our program.

All Upper School students will choose a fall sport this year. We will hold practices during our school day. 7th and 8th-grade students will practice Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and our 5th and 6th-grade students will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Athletic opportunities in the fall will focus on sports in which students are able to socially distance themselves for the majority of their activity. We will follow school guidelines regarding the use of masks and modify activities to promote social distancing. At this time, we will not hold competitions against other schools but will continue to monitor national and state guidance as to participating in games and events.

Our Upper School choices for the fall include:

  • Golf

  • Baseball

  • Running

  • Biking

  • Fitness

  • Skills and Drills Field Hockey

RECESS

LFCDS believes that recess provides students with important movement breaks throughout the day. The benefits of individual and creative play are well documented and we will continue to offer time during the day for our children to get up and move.

We are currently exploring our outdoor facilities and implementing a plan in which each grade would rotate through different areas of the playground, playing fields, and even utilize our outdoor classrooms on a daily basis. Imagine four different sections of our outdoor facility as a new area to play and explore each day!

Example of Possible Rotating Areas
